A Guide To The Agatha Christie Mile Walk Around Torquay

1. The Grand Hotel

The site of Agatha's honeymoon with Archie Christie on Christmas Eve, 1914. It being wartime, the honeymoon was brief : Archie, a flight lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, returned to France two days later. Agatha returned to her parents' house, Ashfield, and her work in the local hospital. Agatha and Archie would not see each other for another six months.

2. Torquay Railway Station

Remembered as the site where Joan Hickson's Miss Marple and David Suchet's Hercule Poirot met for the first time as part of the Centenary Celebrations in 1990. The character never met in Agatha's books. The Orient Express brought Poirot to Torquay.

3. Torre Abbey

Home of the Agatha Christie Potent Plants Garden. Torre Abbey is Torquay's oldest building, dating back to 1196. The Agatha Christie Memorial Room features Agatha's favourite armchair, her 1937 Remington Portable Typewriter and her handwritten script of 'A Caribbean Mystery'.

4. Princess Pier

A favourite spot of Agatha's for roller-skating (costing 2d) and built in the same year that she was born. Pictures of Agatha skating here can be found in Torquay Museum.

5. Princess Gardens

Featured in the ABC Murders, and site of Princess Theatre where the official Agatha Christie Theatre Company tours each year.

6. The Pavillion

Opened in 1912, it was after attending a Wagner concert here that Archie Christie proposed to the young Agatha Miller.

7. Agatha Christie Bust

A bronze bust created to commemorate the Agatha Chrstie centenary year in 1990 by Dutch sculptor Carol Van Den Boom-Cairns.

8. The Strand

The Stand has always been a busy area of Torquay and in Agatha's day was a stopping point for stagecoaches. Recognisable in certain Agatha Christie novels.

9. Torquay Museum

Home to the Agatha Christie Gallery which includes numerous photographs and images and personal effects from an original manuscript to some of her clothes and many first editions.

 
10. Royal Torquay Yacht Club

Agatha's father, Fredrick Miller, was a prominent member here and he would visit daily to play cards & read the newspaper. This routine only changed during the cricket season when he would spend time at the Torquay Cricket Club where he was president.

11. Beacon Cove

Agatha once got into difficulty whilst swimming here and almost drowned. She was rescued by a passing boatman.

12. Imperial Hotel

The Imperial features features in three novels including 'Peril At End House' (where it becomes 'The Majestic'). The hotel terrace is the setting for the final chapter of 'Sleeping Murder'.
